Don’t tell me about your labour pains, just show me the baby
After 40 odd years of doing this, creating the biggest coaching program in the Southern Hemisphere and selling it…
And starting, building, buying and selling 30 plus businesses, this is a conversation I wish I will never have to have again with you or anyone else.
Never have to convene this class and give this lecture one more damn time…
In fact, it makes me as “MAD AS HELL” to have to cover this subject again for your benefit…
Recently, I absolutely wrecked my shoulder, fell backwards down some stairs at home sober as a judge early in the morning.
Completely severed the long bicep and put a hole through the spinatus tendon.
I needed to be operated on but couldn’t be fixed.
For 18 weeks before and after the operation, I have been on pain killers including fast release and a slow release morphine and I never take drugs.
But the advice was right, “just take the drugs”.
Anyway, I never missed one day or one hour of work through all of that, apart from the operation and a couple of days of recovery leading to the weekend which gave me 5 days.
Even the day I did it, I arrived at work on time and got the job done running 6 businesses.
Several of which see me coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs.
Did they or should they care that I was operating under incredible duress?
No, they shouldn’t.
I have been known to say “they don’t care if I am terminal” and nor should they, they are paying me money and I am banking it.
“Don’t tell me about the morning sickness or the
labour pains, just show me the baby!”
And of course, on this occasion, the baby was money in their bank account.
Oh, for the business owner, life partner, family and friend who says “I have got it handled”.
And I mean really handled.
The loop closed.
The subject matter, the mission, completed… MISSION COMPLETE!
It’s a rare commodity.
My step daughter can’t clean the kitchen every night after her mum cooks a meal for her without forgetting to clean something or leaving something out.
MISSION INCOMPLETE.
There are consequences for her, mostly she loses her mobile phone.
Because in business, there are consequences for MISSION INCOMPLETE.
I live with the thought of “how you do some things is how you do everything”.
So, I don’t let my step daughter off the hook, I don’t want this to be how she does everything for the rest of her life.
As she complains to me I explain to her “If I don’t teach you, who will teach your children?”.
For business owners of course, the consequence of MISSION INCOMPLETE is mostly money you never banked or money lost.
And that can be the difference between success and bankruptcy.
All this is a source of great aggravation to me.
I don’t get the list of excuses business owners make but business owners are brilliant at excuses…
I understand that people like to make themselves hero’s with embellished stories of how difficult it was for them to “Complete the Mission”.
Money of course loves completion and doesn’t care about your excuses, however heroic they are.
You have heard the saying “give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for life”.
I figured out years ago that was B.S.
No one wants to learn how to fish these days…
You just want the fish on the plate, cut up in bite size pieces and preferably fed to you by the spoonful.
And believe it or not, even then most will screw it up and not “get it handled”.
So here are some statistics that prove people don’t “get it handled”, don’t “Complete the Mission” according to Dunn and Bradstreet Hoovers.
- Most businesses lose $50K in their first year
- Only approximately 1 in 90 businesses ever reach $1 MILLION DOLLARS in turnover
- Only 1 in 5 ever get to $50K bottom line net profit
- Only 20% of those businesses that got to $50K ever get to $150K bottom line net profit
The damning fact is there is a complete and utter failure to “Complete the Mission” or even define it in the first place.
