Recently I have taken on coaching and mentoring a restaurant and bar establishment.

As you may or may not know, the hospitality industry sees more failures than any other industry.

In another life, I have had quite a few food businesses which I “blew through the roof” in sales and profits and I have never understood why people struggle so much in the food business.

My preferred model, back in the day, was to buy an existing struggling food business at wholesale price.

Then I would optimize (plug all the holes in the business), then innovate (in some way improve the product and service) and then market (tell the story to the marketplace about all the improvements and why they should shop with me).

I often did something most people don’t do… and I still insist upon it today where my clients are concerned and that is I do a survey and ask the existing prospects or clients what they want most and I give them what they want and then your success is virtually assured.

Anyway, I often used simple low cost, high profit gorilla tactics that virtually any business owner could use to get all the clients they ever want…

The biggest mistake most business owners make is they spend their time and money on PAID advertising and ignore FREE publicity completely when what they should be doing is both paid advertising and FREE publicity.

  1. Be controversial and get the ATTENTION of the media and the public. Of course a master at this is Richard Branson. I remember a few years ago when Richard and I were speaking at the National Achievers Conference in Perth, he went on TV that night dressed as a female flight attendant.I bet every TV station in Australia ran that and what do you think it cost Virgin? Absolutely nothing!
    Now I am not suggesting for a moment you do “a Richard Branson” and get dressed up but take my point, be controversial, take a position, take a contrarian view point on a topic that the media are liable to be interested in.
  2. Be on the lookout for OPPORTUNITY with current news and events. When you see a subject is topic of conversation in the media (radio, TV, print online and offline) that is the time to strike.Whenever interest rates are going up or down, that’s an ideal time to do a press release that ties into your business or to beat up on the banks. Another one is fuel prices.

    What you have got to do here is keep your eye on the news coverage and figure out ways to tie in with what’s been covered.

  3. SOLVE a problem or people’s problems and tell the media how you do it (cellulite, wrinkles, make money, fuel price). If you have got a cure for cellulite, wrinkles, if we know how to slash the cost of fuel and if you know how to help people retire early with financial freedom and independence, then this is what I am talking about… The list is almost endless!

Bottom line, it’s about talking about your product or service in relation to the problem it solves for prospects and clients.

Now I wish I could tell you I invented this system but I didn’t. I learnt it from a guy called Paul Hartunian from America who I bought to Australia years ago for one of my big events.

In the US, Paul’s famous as the guy who sold the Brooklyn Bridge piece by piece using the press release model I revealed here.

Here is what he did…

When he heard on the news they were tearing the Brooklyn Bridge down (timber) and building a new one (concrete and steel), he rang the construction guys and told them where they could “dump” the old timber from the bridge.

Paul then cut the timber up in inch by inch pieces, stuck them to a DL size card telling the story of the Brooklyn Bridge for $14.95.

His press release got him on national TV with Johnny Carson who was the biggest deal in late night talk shows.

It also got him many other interviews on radio, TV and print media.

Who knows how much he actually sold the bridge for… but it would have been a lot of money.

Anyway, the good news is many years ago, I bought Paul’s system for creating press releases which I have used very successfully for myself and my clients and have been given 100’s of 1,000’s of dollars’ worth of free publicity.
